  • WRITE NOW™: The Getty-Dubay® Program for Handwriting Success™

    One-hour class

With students using screens more and more even for school assignments, the skill of handwriting is beginning to diminish.

Science affirms the importance of handwriting in cementing ideas in our memory and improving academic skills and grades. “A recent study in Frontiers in Psychology monitored brain activity in students taking notes and found that those writing by hand had higher levels of electrical activity across a wide range of interconnected brain regions responsible for movement, vision, sensory processing and memory,” reports Scientific American.

Kari will be using WRITE NOW™: The Getty-Dubay® Program for Handwriting Success™ to teach italic and cursive handwriting. This class is open to students 3rd grade through 12th grade, whether they are learning cursive for the first time or simply needing to improve neatness in penmanship.

Gary is offering various core classes designed to comport with Texas High School Social Studies credits required of all graduates. Classes are open to students in grades 7-12.

Note: All history courses are infused with a strong geography component and stress local and regional histories where appropriate.

Description

Every true woodsman knows the environment he moves in – and that includes a knowledge of trees and their uses. Trees are a fascinating and beautiful part of Creation. Dendrology – the study of the taxonomy, habits and ranges of trees – can open a whole new window on God’s handiwork.

Learn how to move with confidence through the woods and amaze your family, friends, and yourself with your gained knowledge of trees. Enjoy weekly tree walks and scheduled field trips in search of leafy treasures for your own private collection.

Tree walks will be conducted in the local neighborhood to begin with. At least two field trips will be scheduled at the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.

*Note: Refuge walk days may not end until 5:00 PM.
Also: An opt-in Tree ID Competition will be held at
the refuge beginning at 2:00 PM on November 1.

Requirements

All class participants will need to have:
1. Sturdy shoes and appropriate apparel for long walks
2. Newspapers for pressing leaves
3. White card stock, and a binder for organizing mounted leaves

Each student will be provided with their own copy of a field guide to trees and contact paper.
